Other reviewers have mentioned in detail the flaws and shortcomings of this book so no need for me to repeat the same stuff. For the D50 and D80, I purchased the Digital Field Guides by David Busch. I've owned the Nikon D50, D70s, D80 and most recently, and currently, the D300. I see now that David Busch has a guide for the D300 for sale on Amazon under a different title; wish I had bought that one instead. I found those informative, well written and helpful. When I ordered the "Digital Field Guide" for my new D300, I did not notice that David Busch was not the author - this Thomas guy was. The author of this guide is purported to be a good photographer. I'd strongly recommend he stick to clicking shutters and leave the writing to those who know how to do that.
Also it is in color and has a comprehensive Index. Well-done. The author too gives his opinion on which options he personnally prefers so it is not just a book of facts. Clear and concise description of how to use the mind-boggling number of D300 features. A definite improvement over the Nikon Manual that comes with the camera. A real bargain on Amazon -- you can't go wrong. For the time being, will be taking it on every trip.
Good Book compare to the original manual D300. It also arrived early then expected. The good things about this book is that it has clear picture colour with detail instruction. I would recommand buying this book.Thank you.
This is a piece of garbage, and a mis-represented gyp because the bulk of it is NOT about the D300. So its far more difficult and fatiguing to use than otherwise.
You need a good manual, but this one is garbage.Only about 95 pages is actually about the Nikon D300, and those are little more than a rehash of the Nikon manual and data. The D300 is extremely sophisticated and has far more controls than a small airplane.
The various explanations of terms are particularly replete with errors and near-errors.Another problem with this book is that some idiot typeset it in a hard-to-read, poor legibility sans serif face. There are plenty of errors, and little useful info, much less useful explanation.The rest, around 2/3 of the book, is just generic pastepot info about photography terms and techniques - NOT about the d300.
And much of it is over-simplistic, and more than occasionally flatly wrong. Not that you'd pick up much useful even with perfect typesetting.The best book on the D300 is the one by Busch.
The favorable reviewers either didn't see the better books on the topic, or are shills for the publisher or author.
Can't really recommend to anyone with any earlier experience with digital SLR's.perhaps for beginners purchasing D300 as their first DSLR. Lot of very general information of photography. On the other hand, D300 is not really aimed for that target group. Two stars for beginner book.0-1 starts for anyone else.Number of clear errors in text. Hardly any useful D300 information, that is not easily found from the Nikon D300 manual. Good basis for writing same kind of book from next Nikon model to come.I was expecting usage tips not found in the manual and info based on user experience.and was disappointed.Every minute spent with this book.I should have been shooting with my new D300.
